Disrupting the landscape of organisational culture through inclusive leadership

Georgina Wilson, Your Career & Personal Growth Coach

I’m Georgina, founder and CEO of BUD, and my life mission is to support leaders for positive change by disrupting the landscape of leadership and bridging the gap between corporates & community.

I am also a community organiser, author, motivational speaker, systems thinker, facilitator, coach and process designer. What drives my passion and mission to support others is my past, my struggles and the challenges I personally had to overcome as a woman of colour who wanted to create something of her own and be proud of it.

My goal is that anyone that spends time around me is never left feeling the same – in a positive way. I’ve supported 100’s of people to have deep and transformational moments, mainly by facilitating the opportunity for them to recognise their own value, their skillset and to believe that they can and actually make it happen.

It’s absolutely amazing that I get to be part of that!

A bit more about the company I created….

I created BUD in 2014. We offer workshops, programmes, training, coaching and events to enable individuals and organisations to be the best leaders of self and of others. I believe that training should be transformational, so BUD uses unconventional methods which enables intentional change, the type of change that leaves legacy. Our 5 core values are: to listen means to understand, no person is better, only different, give more than expected, be passionate and have fun! And you know I got a private message 2 weeks ago from one of our team members saying “thank you for making work fun!” Music to my ears, what I hoped for is actually happening.

As part of BUD’s offerings, in 2017 I developed the 8-week Lead Positive Change™ programme and we have delivered this 7 times to different cohorts, with the most recent version being completed this March. It was delivered solemnly online to 24 people of colour looking to develop & launch their community ideas through this start-up programme. Quotes like “This is the best course I have ever done!” and “It was brilliant and loved seeing people like me here!” are the reasons why I started this business and it’s such an absolute privilege to be able to do what we do.

My team and I also developed our ROC™ inclusive leadership model to help leaders support and promote inclusivity in their work and to their teams. This came about while running our “Conversations for Change” sessions, as we recognised that leaders did want to bring change, especially around racial injustice, but they didn’t know where to begin. I developed this model and process to be experiential and transformative, ultimately a way to enable real change in workplaces which leads to societal change.

Some of the other programmes and workshops I developed are “The Fearless Leader”, “Storytelling for Racial Justice” and “Wellbeing in Leadership”. I have only ever created programmes based on needs and gaps, if it’s highlighted enough to me, I’m ready to get stuck in and find a solution through our work.

My journey - Why I started BUD back in 2014

Well, I wanted to Lead Change. It all started when I had the opportunity to run a community cafe in South London but had absolutely no idea how to run something like this to bring change. I knew a lot about conventional business as I had been an entrepreneur for over 12 years at the time. But this was new. I succeeded because of having key people around me to support me. Otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Whilst running the cafe I had the inspiration to create similar opportunities for others to lead their own community-led ideas. But soon I realised that they also needed support, mainly confidence and the right tools. I’d sit over coffee going over how they could develop their ideas and sharing all the things I had learnt from my own journey. There seemed to be an unending line of people so I thought “right, I’d better just create some programmes to facilitate this process”.

After developing, designing and facilitating my own training programmes and supporting other organisations I truly recognise that there is a massive gap between the idea of leading something and actually stepping into it fully. So I started BUD to equip, enable and empower leaders of organisations to lead positive change! And here we are today.

We’ve sustained our organisation through the uncertainties we have all faced by remaining optimistic, hard work and sheer determination to ensure that we would be available to support those that need us. Being the person that others get their momentum and energy from, I have had to adapt, learn and innovate, but I made a choice every day to enjoy the journey, and what an adventure it has been so far! Watch out future – here I come.

What I do isn’t work, it is my passion and my purpose. I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to!

Thank you for being here
